Caelan after a fish

Caelan: "I WANT DAT FISH!!" 
Once the dragon boy has made up his mind, nothing can stop him, not even the fact that he sucks at swimming. I just got a new sketchbook and I think for the very first time, the first drawing I put in it was a good one! I'm quite proud of the colors in this one and all the details, I don't normally do backgrounds, but I'm getting better at stuff like that. And yes, I used a reference for those fish and I'm very proud of them!

    Cælan had superb vision underwater, it was clear as day and the warm colors of green, pale yellow, and silt was both calming and energizing. It was through this vision that Cælan spotted something moving in the seaweed and his dragon instincts gave him no mercy in taking him over. It was a fish! I big, green fish with a bright red tail that stood out like a flag that screamed, “Come and get me! I’m tasty!”

    Cælan put on a burst of speed and opened his mouth to catch the little sucker. It spotted him and dashed out of the way with lighting speed. He cut through the water like a snake after the fish until it joined up with seven others and in the small school he raced after them. The water got deeper and colder the further out he went but he didn’t care, even when the fish dove deeper and it was harder to see. He was the stronger predator, they were nothing to him.

    “Where’d Cælan go?” Jay asked Khalo from above as they worked their way up on the warm rocky beach, but no sooner had he said it did Cælan suddenly burst up from the depths with a fish writhing between his teeth. The hunt had never been so much fun for Cælan. He killed the fish with just the weight of his teeth but he kept it in his mouth so he could eat it on land. He flapped his wings and with some effort he flew over to the shore.

       Cælan plopped down at the water’s edge with a little splash and he purred deep in his chest to feel the warm water lapping only an inch up his forearms. He curled his tail around him and took special time to eat the meat off the fish, avoiding the bones and organs this way. He didn’t like killing things, but his instincts drove him to need it, to perform the hunt like a ritual in order to satisfy his dragon self.

    Cælan licked his claws joyously, licking his lips and once he was clean he began to preen, polishing his horns and scales to his satisfaction. Jay patted his thigh, sneaking up behind him and he growled so Jay took his hands away quickly. Sitting down beside him in the rocks where the water filled in all empty spaces, Jay smiled as they both stared off into the distance.

    “This is great…” Jay whispered, “I don’t even care that this is the Nova world, this is…” he sighed to himself, at a loss for words, “This is just amazing!” Cælan huffed a slow affirmation wordlessly. The fading afternoon sky was still bright a lively, too beautiful for words even though there was no sun to shine high above them, and the heat of day made the water all the more lovely.
